History Quiz

Ten questions, ten levels. Each one shows you four events and a period of history, and asks which two of the four fall inside it. Get it right and the next level narrows the period and reaches for less famous events.

How the levels work

Difficulty moves on two axes at once. The target period starts fifteen centuries wide — level 1 is really asking which millennium something belongs to — and closes to ten years, so guessing roughly the right era stops being enough. At the same time the events themselves get more obscure: level 1 draws only on events with a Wikipedia article in more than 120 languages — the moon landing, the fall of the Berlin Wall, the founding of the Roman Republic — while level 10 will happily ask you about the Battle of Graus.

You will not be marked wrong for a date nobody agrees on. Every event in the quiz is one Wikidata records to an exact year; the tens of thousands of events elsewhere on this site that are known only to a century or a decade are excluded from it entirely, because a question you cannot fairly answer is not a question.

Where the questions come from

All 3,012 of them are drawn from the same Wikidata-derived dataset behind the interactive map, filtered down to events that are dated precisely, phrased as a statement of something that happened, and well enough recorded to be a fair question. Nothing is written by hand except the phrasing of a few dozen famous events whose titles do not read as sentences.
